Remodel HVAC Checklist: Five Questions Before Choosing Equipment

If heating or cooling equipment is part of your home remodel, give the system discussion a place alongside the room layout and finishes. A clear proposal should explain what is being selected and how the installation will be checked. Bring these five questions to the project team.

1. How will the equipment size be determined?

Ask for an explanation of the home's heating and cooling loads. The Department of Energy describes load calculations as the starting point for selecting appropriately sized equipment. A familiar equipment size or a larger model is not enough information to make the decision. Ask which features of your home were included in the calculation and keep a summary with your project documents.

2. What happens to the existing ductwork?

For a ducted system, ask which ducts will be inspected, retained or changed. ENERGY STAR recommends evaluating ducts, testing for leakage and addressing needed repairs. Have the proposal distinguish equipment replacement from duct work so you can see what is included. If the proposed system does not use ducts, ask the team to explain the corresponding room-by-room delivery plan.

3. What installation checks are included?

ENERGY STAR identifies airflow and the correct refrigerant charge as important installation considerations. Ask the HVAC professional which checks apply to the selected equipment and how the results will be documented. These are professional installation tasks, not homeowner adjustments. Identify the person responsible for explaining the completed checks at handover.

4. How will you learn to use the controls?

Request a walkthrough of the thermostat or other controls. Ask how to change normal settings, recognize messages that require service and find the correct instructions for the installed model. ENERGY STAR's maintenance guidance includes checking thermostat settings and system controls. Put any questions about daily operation on the handover list rather than waiting until you need a setting you have never used.

5. What maintenance will the system need?

Ask where filters are located, which replacements are appropriate and what the manufacturer recommends. Discuss the tasks you can safely handle and those that need a qualified service professional. ENERGY STAR recommends regular professional check-ups and attention to filters. Save the model details, manuals and service information together so future maintenance starts with the right equipment information.

Before choosing equipment, organize the proposal around the design basis, included work, installation checks and ongoing care. Ask for unclear items to be explained in writing. Product selection and a planned installation do not establish a particular energy-bill result for your household.
