Planning Electrical Service for a Woodland Hills Garage-Conversion ADU

A garage-conversion floor plan can look settled before the electrical-service questions are answered. Kitchen appliances, water heating, laundry and heating or cooling equipment all belong in the early planning conversation, along with any changes to the main house.

For a Woodland Hills homeowner, establish what the proposed ADU needs and which questions require a qualified electrical professional or utility review. A photograph of the existing panel cannot establish whether the service is suitable.

Build an equipment list before fixing the layout

List cooking equipment, water heating, heating and cooling, laundry and other planned electrical loads. Record model numbers when selected and mark undecided items. Discuss planned work at the main house, including an EV charger or equipment replacement.

This list is an input for professional review, not a homeowner load calculation. Ask who will assess the existing service and prepare the information needed. Do not choose a panel size from a neighboring project or assume an unused breaker space answers the capacity question.

Confirm the utility process for the property

First confirm which utility serves the address. LADWP’s residential electric-service page includes an ADU project route and covers installing, upgrading, relocating or modifying electrical equipment, loads and meters.

Ask who will make the service request, what supporting documents are needed and how the request will be tracked. Keep the utility reference number with the project records.

Resolve equipment location before building around it

Panel and meter locations can affect the layout and access. Ask what must be confirmed before adjacent work is finalized.

LADWP explains that a meter spot verifies placement of a new residential electric service panel and that safety or code requirements can require a different location. Where that process applies, ask the team to incorporate the resulting location information into the project documents. If the preferred location changes, resolve it with the utility. LADWP directs customers to the assigned Electric Service Representative when the spot diagram does not show an acceptable alternative.

Separate the work and decisions in the proposal

Ask the written scope to distinguish electrical work inside the converted garage from service-related work and utility coordination. Discuss:

  • Which existing equipment is proposed to remain.
  • Which items require inspection or further design.
  • Who handles requests, drawings and coordination.
  • What work or charges are excluded or still undetermined.
  • How changes to appliance selections will be reviewed.

Request a schedule showing decisions and dependencies, including any utility work, inspection and connection steps. A construction start date does not establish that every service question has been resolved.

Bring a useful planning packet

Gather the project address, available plans, safely taken photos of visible equipment and a proposed appliance list. Do not open electrical equipment or remove covers to collect information.

California Skyline Remodeling’s Woodland Hills ADU page is a starting point for discussing the conversion and its scope. Bring the electrical questions into that conversation before committing to the finished layout.
